Four Tasks Allergy Sufferers Should Include On Their Spring Cleaning Lists

Spring is in the air, and everyone is bustling about trying to get their homes clean and tidy for the season. If you're an allergy sufferer, you need to be more careful about spring cleaning than most. After spending all winter inside with the windows closed, your home is probably full of mold spores, pet dander, dust and other particles that cause your eyes to water and your nose to plug. Make sure you include these four items in your spring cleaning checklist so you can have some relief from allergies inside your home.

Duct Cleaning

As your heating system runs all winter, allergens accumulate in your ducts. Not only do they slowly spew out and end up being inhaled, but they also end up in your furnace, where they can reduce its energy efficiency. Arrange to have your ducts cleaned by a professional cleaning company like Kettle Valley Duct Cleaner. It only takes a few hours, and you'll be surprised how much cleaner your whole home feels when it's done.

Cleaning Behind and Under the Bed

Pull your bed out from the wall, and thoroughly vacuum and dust beneath and behind it. You'll be amazed how much dust and debris you find back there. Since you're sleeping right over top of it, dust behind your bed can really aggravate your allergies. Remember to do this not just every spring, but every few weeks to keep your allergies at bay.

Launder Your Curtains

It's time to confess. How long has it really been since you washed your curtains? These long pieces of soft fabric are practically magnets for allergens -- especially pollen that blows in through the crevices around your windows. Run them through the wash, and tumble them dry. It might be tempting to let them dry in the breeze outside, but this is not a wise choice if you're allergic to pollen.

Wipe Down Your Walls

Most people don't wash their walls, and so they become quite dirty with small particles that you might not see, but your nose and throat can certainly detect. Save this task until after you've had your ducts cleaned, or else your heating system is just going to keep spewing new particles onto the walls. Use warm water with just a little mild soap, and wipe all of your walls down thoroughly.

Spring cleaning is a great tradition that ensures your home never accumulates more than a year's worth of dust or clutter. Make sure you include the tasks above on your spring cleaning list, and consider doing them in the fall again, too, for a little extra oomph.
