Exposing Two Home Repair Myths

Owning a home is a great responsibility. These structures are extremely expensive to purchase, and if they are not properly maintained, it is possible for them to lose much of their original value and they may become unsafe. Sadly, many new homeowners are not fully prepared for the challenges that they will face, and this can lead them to believe a couple of relatively common misconceptions.

Myth: Hail Damage Only Affects The Roof

Strong storms have the potential to cause major damage to your home through a variety of ways. In addition to damaging winds and downpours, it is possible for large hail stones to cause major damage to your home. Sadly, some people are under the impression that only the roof is susceptible to this type of damage. As a result, they may be surprised when the exterior walls of the home also suffer major hail related damage.

When the hailstones come crashing into the ground, it is not unusual for them to bounce relatively high after the initial impact. During this bounce, it is possible for the icy stones to be launched into the exterior of your home, and this can leave deep dents in the side of your wood or siding.

Myth: Moisture In The Attic Is Always A Sign Of A Roof Leak

It is not particularly unusual for homeowners to run across small puddles of moisture when they are in the attic. While new homeowners may think that this is a sure sign of a leak, there are other problems that can cause pooled water. For example, some homeowners do not realize that substantial amounts of condensation can form in the attic, and this can collect into these pools.

Fortunately, if this is a problem that your home is experiencing, it may be possible to reduce condensation by lowering the humidity level. This can be done by installing a dehumidifier in the attic. You may not want to make this expensive investment, but it may be the most effective way of preventing the condensation from causing major water damage and mold growth in the attic.

Keeping the exterior and interior of your home safe from damage may seem like it is a difficult and labor intensive task. However, this can be made more difficult by believing that some routine misconceptions are actually true. Understanding that hailstones pose a threat to more than just your home's roof and that moisture in the attic may be corrected with a dehumidifier will allow you to better anticipate what is needed to keep your home looking great.
